At SYP Direct we sell two grades of Alabama Longleaf Pine and two grades of Caribbean Heart pine. The Alabama Heart pine is graded based on visible heart content on the face of the board, usually 50% is minimum and can go as high as 80%. Our Caribbean heart pine is sorted based on knots and color variations within the boards. The rustic will contain more sap (knots) and will have the coloration from that sap bleed throughout the floors. Amazing looking boards, not that the prime is not gorgeous, but being from the south we like a little rustic.

New Heart Pine

A very small percentage of logs are even considered for heart pine. Only 60-80 year old trees with the right characteristics are suitable. SYP Direct guarantees (minimum) 50% of the board face to be heart wood. This 50% assurance is unique. Other new heart pine producers have little if any guidelines to follow and it is evident in product quality and consistency. Longleaf heart pine is by far the hardest and densest of all southern yellow pine. It (heartwood) is rated nearly as hard as oak at 1225 on the Janka hardness scale while red oak is 1290. It is also 29% more stable than oak and therefore less likely to warp or cup.

New Heart Pine looks amazing with a simple oil finish as it deepens the heartwood and sap wood colors. The patina and colors will deepen over time and this floor, will age like a fine wine. All floors are tongue and groove unfinished and an actual thick. KILN dried to under 10% with relief grooves on backside for stability. Our mill partner is large enough to have the right equipment and small enough to care.

Precision milled planed smooth in (actual) 3 , 5 1/8, 6 7/8 and 8 7/8. Standard lengths are 8' or 10', with 12' available on commercial deliveries

Caribbean Heart Pine 85%

Caribbean Heart Pine is a beautiful wood prized throughout the world for its distinctive grain, rich, lustrous patina, and durable hardness. Our Caribbean Heart Pine is uniform in color and will range from golden brown to red brown heartwood to lighter brown sapwood. Caribbean Heart Pine deepens in dark red color over time. Caribbean Heart Pine has a Janka rating of 1280, only a small fraction less than Northern Red Oak. The grades are not sorted based on heart content but rather knot frequency and the rustic grade will more color variation and character. The rustic grade will have more frequent knots and the sapwood will generally be within this grade. The select or prime grade will have in frequent knots, a darker color and a more consistent color range. Please note that color variations in these floors is not as dramatic as the variance we talk about with our #2 or better floors, more subtle even in rustic grade.

Our Unfinished Caribbean Heart Pine can be finish in a number of different ways. When asked, we tell customers that less is more. Let these floors do their thing and get better looking over time. A slight tint or even oil will darken and enhance patina formation, but the beauty of this wood should not be covered in too much stain, unless of course, you are creating a faux age or distressed look.

Pricing our Caribbean Heart Pine is a more fluid situation. With distribution in New Hampshire, South Carolina and New Orleans, inventory and availability play a part in pricing. We have no minimum orders but broken pallet fees ($75.00) occur with orders below 1050 square feet. Again, pricing varies and over stocking does happen, so check with us for a custom quote.
