My name is Steven Z., and I am a recent graduate from Pepperdine University with a B.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a Certificate in Conflict Management. Currently, I am pursuing a Masters in Religion at Pepperdine, while working in the Chaplain's Office as a graduate intern and serving as a Teacher's Assistant for an undergraduate Humanities course. In the past, I have completed upper-division Psychology and Business and Communications courses with a GPA of 3.97/4.0, math courses up to Calculus III and Statistics, scored 170/170 on the GRE math section and 790/800 on the SAT math section, and scored 5's on a variety of AP tests including Calculus and Statistics.
In addition to my breadth of knowledge, I am confident in my ability to pass on this knowledge to younger students. I've worked with students in the past as a swim coach (5+ years), Sunday school teacher (2+ years), and public speaking coach (3+ years). I find that my background in psychology and communication helps me relate to students and understand how to convey information to them in a way that they can understand. For example, I am known to teaching concepts using creative analogies that a student can relate to. I strongly believe that learning is not about memorizing information, but rather, developing good practices for seeking further understanding and comprehension about a subject. This philosophy seeps into my teaching style, which is much more focused on comprehension than memorization.
My strongest suit in tutoring is the work I put into preparing for each and every student. Even though I bill for only the hours tutored, I spend countless other hours (sometimes more than an hour outside of tutoring in order to prepare for an one-hour session!) looking at the student's previous work or syllabus, printing out sample problems, and creating long-term plans and goals. Whether it is for a year-long class or just to get some last minute preparation for an upcoming test, I am confident that I can help you succeed!
I look forward to working with you!
