Hello! Thanks for your interest. Do you have any sort of mental illness? If yes, then I need YOU!
I am a student at Springfield Technical Community College doing a semester-long project in my film photography class. With this project, I hope to de-stigmatize mental illness. Still interested? Read more below.
My proposed project is to photograph people who suffer from mental illness. I plan to use one roll of 35mm film per person, and along with the photo I plan to get quotes and stories from them explaining their struggle and experience with their specific illness. I will photograph some people I know, but also will find people that I don't know and photograph them.
I plan to use online resources to find people in Western Mass who struggle with mental illnesses and would be willing to share their story with me. It is my hope that at the end of my project I will have accumulated at least 30 different people's stories.
I plan to print my photos and put up a display in a local gallery. I will print, mat, and frame multiple photos of various sizes for each person, so I can accurately display their personality. Along with their quotes and stories, I will put a definition and explanation of each person's specific mental illness.
I plan to have my work be judged by how well I am able to display each person as someone who lives with an illness that is so stigmatized in today's society, and how they cope with that.
As stated before, I will put my work in a local gallery at the end of the semester, and have feedback sheets for people who come to view it. I can also present my work to Sondra Peron's photography classes at STCC to show what can be done when one uses photography as a tool to promote social activism.
PLEASE if interested, contact me as soon as possible so we can set up a time and place for an interview. All interviews will be conducted in public parks. Safety is my #1 priority throughout this project.
