This position meets the needs of Head Start and Early Head Start families by assisting the Family Advocate in establishing and maintaining a positive child/family oriented environment and nurturing each family's growth. The child family advocate assistant will assist in determining eligibility and enrolling families in the program and enlisting parental involvement in child educational programs. This position will work with parents in identifying and achieving goals; accessing support services; creating training programs; and facilitating positive parent, school and student relationships.

Essential Functions:
Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. program participation, contact sheets, family file, Child Plus computer program, agency referrals, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or documentation
Helps the Family Advocate in planning and preparing activities and supports teachers in meeting the needs of families
Participates in child screening, classroom planning, activity planning and preparation, and adult volunteer training according to HS/EHS guidelines
Assists in the planning and promoting of parent/family participation in learning activities; participates in parent meetings; assists in preparing flyers and newsletters and making phone calls to parents/guardians; participates in periodic home visits and family conferences to discuss student progress and development with parents/guardians
Contributes to recruitment and enrollment activities
Assists the Family Advocate in making appropriate referrals upon recognition of a family or child's special needs
Maintains attendance records and a variety of other forms to help ensure compliance with HS/EHS requirements; assists in maintaining confidential records; duplicates, organizes, distributes, and files a variety of information
Assists in assessing family and infant/child needs (e.g. conducts surveys, interviews, etc.) for the purpose of determining eligibility and/or developing an action plan to remove barriers to child's success in school
Supports parents in a variety of areas (e.g. filling out forms/surveys, health, nutrition living skills, budgeting, job skills, goal setting, etc.) for the purpose of developing an action plan to remove barriers to child's success in school and supporting the family in basic life skills
Attends a variety of meetings, classes, workshops, seminars, and other training activities to update knowledge of current developments in early childhood education, and compliance with program rules and regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED and
One year of successful relevant work experience with families of young children OR
At least 12 college quarter credits in human development or child development OR
A CDA (Child Development Associate) credential

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start program and ability to support the philosophy and components of the program
Knowledge of early childhood programming
Knowledge of childhood academic, social, emotional, and physical development.
Ability to obtain, clarify and exchange information
Ability to relate positively with families and small children
Ability to work with families with special needs children
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate activities
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural setting
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work as a cooperative team member

Conditions of Employment:
Must complete a DEL background check as part of employment
Current First Aid and CPR certifications and Food Handler's permit are required to obtain within the first three months of employment
TB test required at time of employment
Valid Washington State driver's license and access to personal transportation
