Up for sale is one 18 prong, large 5" high by roughly 4 3/4" wide vintage, richly etched or engraved, brass elephant bell from India. It has great sound and is in wonderful condition! On the lip of this bell there is an engraving that reads "India 695".
There are three basic design styles for these bells:
#1. Total Utilitarian which has no markings
#2. Fancier Utilitarian which is inscribed with markings, the type of markings can indicate the general area of India where the bell was made.
#3. Decorative which are usually colored with enamel for royalty, parades, ceremonies, weddings and for use as decorative hand bells. This type of bell with enamel coloring are typically the newer versions.
Elephant bells were often sold as souvenirs in the middle decades of the last century, regularly to be seen displayed in living room across UK at that time, they have since became collector's items. Elephant bells from India all have the same basic design to them and the number of tines on the bell can be even or odd, the larger bells, the more tines or claw fingers it has.
The earliest "claw" bells have relatively thin rounded tines with a wider gap between the tines or claw fingers. The newest version of the bell has for the most part done away with the tines altogether.
