The Roofing Technician is responsible for installation and repair of roofing using a variety of materials including shingles, asphalt, metal, and elastomeric coatings on the commercial and industrial buildings on the campus. Cleans off roofs after projects, maintenance work, storms and other events. The Roofing Technician will report to the JLL Manager of Soft Services and must be experienced in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications to determine the layout and materials of construction for roofing systems.
The Roofing Technician will work in cooperation with other technicians, engineers, and managers to ensure efficient completion of all projects. The incumbent will ensure that all building roofs and appurtenances are installed, and maintained to meet all standards of building codes, safety, and aesthetic presentation. Roofing Technician will spend a significant percentage of work time performing non-roofing tasks for general building maintenance.
Performs general inspection, repair, and general maintenance of building roofs to preserve integrity of water seal, and energy conservation
Maintains records and documentation on roof conditions and repairs
Inspects to locate source of roof leaks into building spaces
Set up scaffolding to provide safe access to roofs
Clean and maintain equipment, clear and clean out gutters and drains
Repair roofing systems using modified plastics, elastomeric, or asphaltic compositions
Install vapor barriers or layers of insulation on flat or low slope roofs
Cut materials-flashing to fit angles formed by walls, vents, or intersecting roof surfaces
Spray roofs, sidings, or walls to bind, seal, insulate, or soundproof sections of structures, using spray guns, air compressors, or heaters
Repair damage from storms and high winds, replace damaged joists or plywood
Waterproof or damp-proof walls, floors, roofs, foundations, or basements by painting or spraying surfaces with waterproof coatings or by attaching waterproofing membranes
Cover roofs or exterior walls of structures with slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, gravel, gypsum, or related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers, or other tools
Attach solar panels to existing roofs, according to specifications and without damaging roofing materials or the structural integrity of buildings.
Install attic ventilation systems, such as turbine vents, gable or ridge vents, or conventional or solar-powered exhaust fans.
Install roof skylights to increase natural light inside structures or to reduce energy costs.
Inspect problem roofs to determine the best way to repair them
Estimates sizes, distances, and qualities so as to determine cost, time, resources or materials needed to perform projects and work activities
Review building plans and specifications to determine the layout for roofing and related materials including sequence of installation and materials needed
Measure roof to calculate the quantities of materials needed
Evaluates information to determine compliance with site and engineering standards, and local building codes and regulations as they may apply.
Inspects structure to determine obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of existing structure resulting from installations and repairs
Walks, and inspects conditions associated with roof permits and close outs
Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on roofing systems and fixtures
Ensure all requirements as specified by the manufacturer of systems and fittings are met
Ensure all installations, repairs, modifications, and maintenance meet the requirements of the appropriate codes and environmental protection requirements
Administer and Schedule Work
Assists in preparing project and departmental budgets
Prepares orders of supplies
Keeps daily reports, records, rounds and reading for assigned equipment
Schedules and coordinates own work in cooperation with other Technicians
Education and Experience:
High School graduation or GED is required
Technical College or Trade Program is preferred, Journeyman Roofer
The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in:
Relevant building codes, legislation, regulations, policies and procedures for installation and maintenance of roofing systems and materials
Both low slope roofs and steep slope roofs
Five years' experience with roofing and general building maintenance activities in an Industrial setting are highly preferred
Competency in basic mathematic skills including fractions, addition, subtraction, division

The Roofing Technician must have an appropriate focus on personal, and group safety

The Roofing Technician may spend extended hours working inside and outside in all weather conditions, and in awkward body positions which can cause physical discomfort and strain. Roofing work can be hot, and physically demanding. Roofing work includes physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and lifting heavy materials. The Roofing Technician will be required to regularly lift up to 50 lbs and to adjust heavy object. Foreseeably the position will come in contact with sharp, hot, cold, and wet supplies, equipment, and parts. The Roofing Technician must be medically qualified to wear a respirator.
Sensory demands include exposure to the smells associated with the use of elastomeric and sealing compounds, workplace chemicals, and sounds associated with powered tools and industrial equipment. Roofing Technician must have the ability to routinely and safely climb ladders, work at elevation from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, roofs, or platforms, and the ability to work in confined spaces
