Carolina Veterinary Specialists is looking for a qualified Veterinary Technician to join our busy Medical Oncology department at the Matthews clinic. The schedule is a 4-day work week with limited on-call rotation.

** PLEASE NOTE: Due to the very specific nature of this position, applicants are required to possess some/all of the following and is not eligible for internal transfer applicants:

Previous oncology experience
Common and working knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents including indications, adverse effects and dosing considerations
Extensive catheter placement skills including experience with compromised and difficult patients
Extraordinary and proven client communication abilities
Above-average time management and multi-tasking skills

Responsible for all aspects of Medical oncology flow including seeing routine and sick appointments, performing diagnostics, completing blood work for patients, accurate and precise venipuncture skills, safe administration of chemotherapeutic agents, patient examination and restraint, administering and monitoring anesthesia in the pre-, peri-, and post-operative periods, maintaining treatment while in hospital, discharging patients from the hospital, and client communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Take accurate history for patients
Client Communication according to hospital policy
Oversee and approve as necessary, appointment schedule and emergency add-on patients
Ability to perform safe, accurate drug calculations
Appropriately restrain patients for examinations, procedures and blood draws
Ability to place catheters and draw blood in patients with compromised veins
Use appropriate precautions and safety measures for chemotherapy administration and radiation administration
Proactive role in patient hospitalization and treatment procedures
Properly prep and scrub patients for sterile procedures
Maintain anesthesia for all procedures requiring it
Monitor patient parameters and notify doctor of potential concerns
Properly maintain/house all hazardous chemotherapeutic materials
Proper bandage and wound care for patients
Particular ability to provide patient and compassionate nursing care for debilitated patients
Maintain the efficiency of the service by utilizing time management skills to recognize and complete tasks in a timely manner
Ability to be particularly compassionate and patient with clients experiencing grief

Qualified Candidates will possess the following:

At least 1 year of experience as an assistant/technician
Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, general laboratory, anesthesia and pharmacology skills
Knowledge of normal patient parameters
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to administer and knowledge of medication and fluid therapies
Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as part of a team
Strong work ethic and good organizational and multi-tasking skills
Able to lift 50 pounds
Credentialed technician preferred but not required of the right candidate

Desired Competencies:
Working knowledge of Oncology medications and drugs
Awareness of safety concerns associated with chemotherapy and radiation
Knowledge of normal patient parameters
Knowledge of critical nursing care and steps to take in the event of patient compromise
Knowledge of Oncology medical terminology and disease processes
Ability to administer safe and appropriate fluid therapy
Ability to monitor anesthesia safely
Above average venipuncture ability
