Shep (aka Toad) was rescued by All Hearts Rescue a year ago from a high kill shelter in California who'd rescued him as a stray. Who knows what his past was like, but it must have been horrible because he's only now learning that not all humans are bad, and actually wagging his tail, instead of cringing when strangers approach him. I've fostered scared dogs with extremely inhumane histories, and it's never taken this long to build trust.
But if you have the time, understanding, and love, want an extremely loyal, appreciative forever best friend, you cant get any better than a rescue dog, especially one just beginning to know how nice a home, a bed, his own food bowl, some ear and butt scratches can be. Once that bond is established he will never want you out of his sight, and never want to let you down!
He is SO CUTE. He's an impish looking chihuahua cross with big dark eyes, and cream color coat. Once he warms up to you, he will melt your heart, but he needs and deserves a special, understanding home. He seems to love children too, but they need to understand not run at him or maul him. He would love to chase the bunny and the chickens, but just clearing your throat will change his mind, and he's oblivious to the cat. Similarly, I don't thing he knew any better/had any options but to "mark his turf", but he's responding well now. He's not a biter, 3 years old, neutered and vaccinated. He's very attentive and eager to please, thus very trainable.
