Tanya Donelly seems much more free to express her own style now that she's on her own (not part of Belly, Throwing Muses, etc.) on her solo "Lovesongs for Underdogs". This is a somewhat more low-key Tanya than we saw before, but there is still that electric guitar, rock sound going on. And as expected, the real magic is in the lyrics. Fun catchy alt-rock-pop songs. . .

"Whiskey Tango Ghosts" is the third solo album by Tanya Donelly, wich marks a departure form Donelly's previous pop work in favor of a country & folk-influenced sound. Donelly has described the album as influenced by "a horrible war, a horrible administration, (and) a bleak, mean winter. Lyrically, Whiskey Tango Ghosts seems more intimate and personal than previous works. The recurring themes are the supernatural & human relationships; the latter presented universally. . . Alternative music reminiscent of Kristin Hersh, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Tori Amos,etc..

Kristin Hersh's (of Throwing Muses) "Sunny Border Blue" exists in a snowed-in, two-room cabin, & she's stuck feeding the potbellied stove, hoping the chimney doesn't back up, braced always against the other. That other sometimes forms a lover, sometimes a freind, or a child, a confidante, or a betrayer--the figure's face shifts even as the singer flips form seeping anxious jealousy ("Spain") to railing ("37 Hours"). Hersh plays all instruments except on "Trouble," a Cat Stevens cover that fits the smooth sonic landscape but stands out form her own songs in sticking to one emotional sensibility. Short on the noise & vocal histrionics of her earlier work, Sunny Border Blue is a softer yet catchy pop album.
