10-cassette set in binder by Richard Rohr, O.F.M., originally $55.95
Rohr reprises his best-selling talks on scripture in this powerful new series. Rohr describes the Bible as a text in travail, containing not just conclusions, but a process wich mirrors our own journey (three steps foward, two steps backward). In the three steps foward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.
Rohr suggests that God is different than we thought and much better than we feared. In fact God cannot be fully grasped by thought and must not be approached in servile fear. God is present in our midst and is calling forth a people and a consciosness that is capable of divine union. This invitation is revealed in a developmental way in both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. The resurrected Jesus finaly reveals the full and wonder-filled nature of the heart of God. As a result, Rohr says, "We have nothing to be afraid of and much to be excited about!"
Richard Rohr's dynamic preaching has opened up the Scriptures to people wordlwide. The original Great Themes of Scriptures cassettes were very popular. Now after twenty-five years of study and prayer and teaching, Richard takes a unique approach in this entirely new series.
Instead of treating the Bible as a collection of isolated books, he treats it as one inspired theology. Woven through it he uncovers nine "prime ideas" that gradually unfold through both the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures: shame, and separation, vengance and victims, law, grace, the redefinition of power, mystery, fear, and intimacy, the paradox of the cross and the process of divinization or "mutual indwelling."
Fr. Richard describes the Bible as a text in travail, containing not just conclusions, but a process wich mirrors our own journey (three steps foward, two steps backward). In the three steps foward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.
Much of religion discloses human beings trying to become spiritual. We are already spritual, says Fr. Richard, our desperate task with the Spirit's help is to be more fully human. Our journey reveals the whole story of human history -- a story of transformation. Throughout history, human consciosness develops so that we can finaly imitate and relate to a totally non-violent God.
