Position: Summer Camp Language Arts Teacher

Employment Status: Temporary, part‐time, nonexempt (limited duration, not to exceed
1,000 hours) form 6/25/12 ‐ 8/10/12
Hours: Regular hours are 9:30 am -- 3:30 pm. (M, T, Wed, Th.)
Supervision: No supervisory requirements
Reports To: Direct Services Manager and Education Coordinator
Job Location: Portland, OR
Position Description: The Summer Camp Language Arts Teacher is responsible for the
instruction and supervision of students. Instruction of 3rd -- 8th grade students shall include
individual skill development in the subject of Language Arts, expansion of knowlege and
development of ability to reason. The Summer Camp Language Arts Teacher will build a
curriculum of hands‐on lessons to build skills with incomming 3rd -- 8th grade students who will
be taught in three seperate classes daily (3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, 7th & 8th). Supervision of students
shall include guidance, development and safety. The classroom teacher functions in
accordance with the established policies, rules, regulations and the performance standards of
the NAYA Family Center and the performance goals established for the teacher. The Summer
Camp Language Arts Teacher will work with individuals and in groups to accomplish the
objectives of the program in a 5 week long summer camp that will offer students a supportive,
culturally responsive learning enviroment.
About the Program: The NAYA Summer Camp will provide 80 -- 100 students the
opportunity to continue building academic skills over the summer in a supportive, culturally
nurturing, enviroment. The classroom will be supported by Youth Advocates who will work
individually with struggling youth. Students will be able to improve upon their Language
Arts, with the objective of making significant gains throughout the program. The Language
Arts curriculum will be driven by state standards. Additionally, components of the NAYA
Summer Camp will include Cultural Arts, Recreation and Leadership Development.
Essential Functions:
 Identifies the needs of a group of students as well as individual students and provides for
continuous assessment of their ability.

 Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and performance goals in accordance
with State Standards in order to provide instruction for three classes daily.
 Provides instruction to students at appropriate levels in the subject matter(s) for wich the
teacher is assigned in the locations and at the times designated.
 Creates educational experiences that provide each student the opportunity to develop
his/her potential in the areas of personal‐social adjustment, descision‐making, positive selfimage
and other life skills.
 Provides instruction, organization and management in the classroom wich creates an
enviroment conducive to learning.
 Establishes, maintains and supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in
accordance with the discipline policies and regulations of the NAYA Family Center.
 Evaluates the students' academic progress and social growth, maintains appropriate
records, prepares reports and communicates with Youth Advocates on the individual
students' progress.
 Supervises students both in and out of the classroom.
 Takes all neccessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials,
and facilities.
 Diagnoses, instructs and evaluates specific student needs and seeks assistance of specialists
as required.
 Communicates concerns and ideas with collegues, students, parents and community in a
positive, professional and ethical manner.
 Promotes and follows the adopted NAYA Family Center philosophy, policies, regulations
and administrative procedures.
 Participates in the assessment and planning of curriculum development and other
programs to meet the needs of the NAYA Summer Ascend.
 Coordinate with NAYA Youth Advocates and volunteers who are assigned to assist the

Additional Requirements:
 Other duties as assigned by the Direct Services Manager and Education Coordinator
 Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
 Coordinate wraparound services effectively with other NAYA Family Center programs
and staff.
 Certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), 1st Aid and Automatic External
Defibulator (AED) or willing to become certified.
 familarity with or ability to learn, input data, and maintain NAYA and/or contractually
required infomation database systems to track client infomation. Includes entering client
data, assisting and/or preparing periodic reports. Database examples include but are not
limited to: Efforts to Outcome (ETO), eSIS, Counselor Max, SAGE Fund Accounting,
Raisers Edge, etc.

 NAYA Family Center is a team and community‐based organization that relies heavily on
all members of the team participating and supporting each other. It is a requirement of this
position to work as an active member of the team, participate actively in crossdepartmental
NAYA team projects and to contribute to fostering a safe and secure
enviroment for community members and staff.
Qualifications and Skills:
 Meets current certification requirements as set forth in Oregon Rules for Certification of
Teachers, Specialists and Administrators. Non‐certified teachers with significant and
exceptional professional and cultural experience may be considered.
 Experience working in the high school setting with at‐risk youth prefered.
 Strong community building skills.
 Demonstrated ability in project management (planning, organizing, prioritizing work and
follow‐through) and team building skills.
 Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, verbal and written communication skills,
including demonstrated ability to write persuasively and a proven track record of
collaborative leadership.
 Demonstrated problem solving skills.
 Demonstrated knowlege and understanding of the local educational system and
enviroment, including the elements neccessary for student success, with a proven track
record of improving student acheivement.
 Experience working within diverse populations specifically with the urban and reservation
Native population, including working within a Native American tribe, organization, board,
program, or community. knowlege of Native American history, an understanding of the
diversity of the local American Indian/Alaskan Native community and issues surrounding
the Urban Indian experience.
 knowlege of local community resources and experience with workforce system and social
service agencies, especially with low‐income and ethnic minority clientele.
 Strong computer skills including web based research, word processing, database
management, email, and Microsoft Office programs.
Education/Experience: Minimum BA, BS. Master's Degree in Education or content area
Work enviroment: 90% office/classroom, 10% outside office including travel time.
Physical Requirements: lifting a maximum of 30 pounds, sitting for extended periods of time.
Equipment Used: Computer, phone, fax, copy machine.
Safety Considerations: Some travel may be required.

be eligible to be an insured driver under NAYA Family Center's liability insurance
policy, and remain so during the course of employment.
