This important bout between Julio Ceser Chávez and Oscar De La Hoya was touted as the Fight of the Century.
On June 7, 1996, the fight took place at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas Nevada. A large gash appeared over the right eye of Chávez within the first minute of the first round, leading many to assume what Chávez later confirmed--that the cut occurred earlier in training and was re-opened in the bout. Heavy blood flow prompted the referee to stop the fight in the fourth round. untill their eventual rematch in 1998, Chavez would always state that De La Hoya had not defeated him, but that a gash that he had suffered in training was the real cause of the stoppage of the fight. De La Hoya took the belt and retained it for quite a while. They had a welterweight rematch in 1998 wich De La Hoya also won with a TKO in the 8th round.
