STEAMER TRUNK form MULTNOMAH CO PORTLAND, OREGON
BAGGAGEMAN PROOF 1920s or EARLIER
LISTED AS A COLLECTIBLE FOR THE OREGON TERRITORY AND EARLY 1900s ERA
HISTORY: "Steamer trunks, wich are sometimes refered to as flat-tops, first appeared in the late 1870s, although the greater bulk of them date form the 1880-1920 period. They are distinguished by either their flat or slightly-curved tops and were usually covered in canvas, leather or patterned paper. Other names listed in old catalogs for these typos of trunks are flat-tops, packers, and cabin trunks. Since it has been widely called a steamer for so long, it is now a hallmark of this style." Multnomah was the 13th county to become part of the Oregon Territory during the 1850s. Many settlers who arrived in the Oregon Territory used steamer and wardrobe trunks as luggage while traveling out west by railraod. The link provides history of luggage trunks used during early 1900s and shows other pictures of steamer trunks.
